Greater Pittsburgh Moving Tips

Moving Tips

Grab a stack of boxes and a fresh roll of tape, and let's get started! Here are a few of the most important things to remember while you're packing up your home.

yard sale

Tip #1:

Feeling weighed down by extra clutter? Host a garage or yard sale to get rid of outgrown or unused items. If time prevents you from holding a yard sale, consider donating the items to a charitable organization like the Salvation Army or the Goodwill Foundation.

packing boxes

Tip #2:

Make sure you use sturdy, reinforced boxes, and if packing fragile items, pack them with care. Consider getting bubble wrap or other packing material for extra cushion and security. If you snag free boxes from the supermarket or another store, just remember they are likely not reinforced.

Tip #3:

Mark fragile boxes so you and the movers can quickly and easily identify them. Be sure to point out those boxes containing high-value items and secure extra insurance for those items ahead of time if necessary. Pack dishes, bowls, plates, and other glass objects vertically, and pack heavier items in smaller boxes.

Tip #4:

Organization is your friend! Don't forget to label your boxes, especially any box that contains items that are needed immediately, such as sheets and towels. You'll need those items first when you move in, and you won't want to rifle through all of your possessions to find them.

moving day box

Tip #5:

Create an "OPEN ME FIRST" box containing personal essentials like toilet paper, soap, toothpaste, paper plates, paper cups, paper towels, snacks, instant coffee or tea bags, soap, flashlights, and any other items you know you'll need ASAP.

moving documents

Tip #6:

If you're using a moving truck or company, read through all moving documents before you sign anything. If you don't understand something, ask for a clear explanation. Note your shipment's registration number, and keep your Bill of Loading handy during the move.

Tip #7:

If you're moving long distance, it's possible your mover may have to use a warehouse to store your furniture and belongings for several days. Ask your mover if your goods will remain on the truck until delivered. If they have to be stored, ask for more information on the warehouse.

important documents

Tip #8:

Lastly, you'll want to keep all your personal documentation (medical, school, financial records) and medications with you for your security and convenience. You never know when you might need them!
